The view of Long Island Sound this morning is so incredible, a person could get lost in the moment. It’s a quiet moment with calm quiet water as far as the eye can see. A person could almost get lost in the moment and forget all what is to come later in the week. Holy Week filled with love, pain, hurt, devastation, agony and hope fulfilled.
Could Palm Sunday have just been a few days ago when we celebrated the triumphant entrance of Jesus in Jerusalem? Could it really have just been a short time ago when the words were of joy and love? And here I am now with the world around me quiet and still just like it might have been that night right before the people began gathering to celebrate the Passover meal with family and friends.
The Jewish people had gathered as they had for years from near and far to share in the blessing of the Passover meal. Jesus gathered with disciples who had become like family to him. Can you see him in the dusty dirty streets back in the corner of Jerusalem with all the people rushing around to finish the holiday preparation? Hidden in the back of the city on a dead end street was an upper room. In that dark room, Jesus watched the disciples whom he had come to love with his whole heart, moments from turning their backs on him. Just yards away, the plotting against Jesus began by those he had walked with… laughed with … eaten many meals with…they would now turn away in his greatest moment of need. Jesus lovingly looked into their eyes and deep into their hearts. Jesus dined with them. And then it happened. Supper was finished. Jesus took the bread and broke it. Jesus took the cup and blessed it. Life would be forever changed.
Beyond the betrayal. The arrest. The nails. The cross. The painful tortuous death. The journey toward the tomb. Finally the fulfillment of the promise in the resurrection of our Lord!
Come join us at First Church! We too are on a journey of discovery. We have shared love, challenge, hurt, pain, struggle, compassion and joy as the faithful followers of Jesus Christ. We come as we are, to worship God here in this place and time. We are children and adults, young and old, married and single, women and men seeking to move beyond our human imperfections to be the compassion and mercy to the world. We are working on numerous projects to serve those locally, nationally and globally.
Our beginnings brought us to this point 300 years in the making. We want to be bold, kind, loving, forgiving, and courageous individuals guided by the power of our risen Lord. Come be part of a devoted community of faith working and striving to be Christ’s compassion and mercy in the world. Honoring our past, we connect to build a bright new future guided by the Holy Spirit which is alive here at First Church.
